Information Technology
Introduction -
Information Technology Engineering or IT Engineering as it is popularly known, deals with the technology of communicating information.
According to the Information Technology Association of America “Information Technology is the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems particularly software applications and computer hardware”.
Computers and Internet have become a way of life in the new millennium. Whether it is education, research, science and technology, business or just pure entertainment, we need the computers in all walks of life. We must also thank computers because it has very closely knit each part of the world in the world wide web of the Internet. Almost no place in the world is left undiscovered and we are able to receive any information we want on any country, any city or even an island within minutes.
Today we are well aware of the proceedings of U.S. Senate or the racial attacks on Indians in Australia just like they are about the new released movies in India or Sachin Tendulkar making a world Record of scoring a double century in an a One Day International cricket match, this and so much more. People are communicating with each other across the countries, online business and outsourcing of jobs has become a very popular way of earning. Students can find all the information they need for their projects very easily. This communication of the Information has been possible because of the introduction of Information Technology. Today we cannot even imagine the circumstances without the exchange of information around the world. This is such an incredible achievement.
Information Technology Engineering uses electronic computers and computer software for the conversion, storage, protection, processing, transmission and safe recovery of information. It has played a very important role in enabling
India
to emerge as a reckoning force in the world. We are being noticed for our eye opening progress in the field of education, research, technology, entertainment and even sports. Politically, today when
India
speaks, other countries listen and even pay heed to our statements. Suddenly we are being applauded for our actions. People are attracted by
India
and simply love to visit this place. It is the tremendous hard work and skills of our IT Engineers who have enabled us to convey our talent, knowledge and skills to the world.
IT Engineers have many duties. They install applications to design complicated computer networks and information database. Their work also includes data management, engineering of computer hardware, networking, database and software designing. They also oversee the management, administration and maintenance of the whole systems. Like every field, information technology engineering is also constantly progressing and it has extended his jurisdiction from computer to other media related fields. The IT Engineers also focus on devising new systems for television, cell phones, automobile etc.
IT Engineering is a very challenging career so it needs technical brilliance to be successful. A person should have analyzing ability, focused mind-set and a knack to trace the minutest details. Good communication skills and ability to work within a team is also very crucial for enjoying IT Engineering as a career.
Educational: The basic eligibility criteria for B.E and B.Tech in IT Engineering are 10+2 or Equivalent Examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The eligibility for Diploma in IT Engineering is 10+2 with science subjects. After Bachelor’s degree you can go on for a Master’s degree (M.E / M.Tech). The eligibility of ME /M.Tech in IT Engineering is BE /B.Tech in IT Engineering.
Selection: Selection is generally made on the basis on marks obtained in the +2 stage and the merit in the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by a competent authority. Admission to the major institutions is through AIEEE (All India Engineering/Pharmacy/Architecture Entrance Examination). Some states also conduct their own separate examinations. Selection to the ME/ MTech programs in various engineering colleges and universities like the IITs and NITs is through GATE (The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering).
Duration: BE / B.Tech courses in IT Engineering are of 4 years (8 semesters). Diploma course in IT Engineering are of 3 years. ME/ M.Tech in IT Engineering is 2 years (4 semesters)
Different Branches
Computer Hardware Engineering – Computer Hardware Engineering is the discipline of IT Engineering which deals with physical parts of a computer system. The Computer Hardware Engineers work on the designing and development of computer hardware such as computer chips, printers, circuit boards and modems. They are also responsible for testing the hardware and supervising the installation of the hardware.
Computer Software Engineering – Computer Software Engineering concerns with the designing and development of programs for a variety of functions performed by the computer. Computer Software Engineers design various programs like computer games, business applications, operating systems etc to control the complex technical hardware systems and other equipments.
Computer Languages Engineering - Computer Languages Engineering deals with the programming of languages used in Computers. A Computer Languages Engineer develops instructions or language for the computer to execute e.g. COBOL, FORTRAN, PASCAL etc. There are two types of languages, high level and low level. Low level language is easily understood by the computer but people are unable to grasp it whereas the High level language is easily understood by the people but computer needs a Compiler to translate the language to enable it to be understood by the computer. The Computer Languages Engineers are also responsible for designing and implementing a Compiler.
Information System Engineering - Information System Engineering deals with the various procedures, hardware, software and data which are used to collect and analyze information. The Information System Engineers are responsible for designing, developing, testing and maintaining information systems.
Networks Engineering - Networks Engineering is the discipline of IT Engineering which deals with the proper functioning of computer networks. Network Engineers are responsible for the designing, developing, installing and maintenance of computer networks. His duty is to take care of the networking devices like cables, media, network switches and protocols for the accurate communication of information.
Career options
Information Technology is flourishing as an industry and therefore there is a wide range of opportunities for IT Engineers in
India
and abroad. IT Engineers are involved in analyzing problems for solutions, formulating and testing using advanced communications or multi-media equipment or working with a team for the development of computer networks.
There are lots of opportunities in universities, research, private and public industries, government department and business organizations, commercial organizations and manufacturing sector. Computer networking is something which would only grow so IT Engineers have a lot of scope in that area. For instance the Internet is continuously innovating and therefore it needs their services for the perfect functioning of Internet, intranet, and World Wide Web applications.
IT Engineers can work as a Software Engineer or Hardware Engineer. They can work as programmers, web developers and E-Commerce Specialists with industries that build or use computer based systems such as such as telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, etc. National and multi-national computer manufacturing companies; computer hardware system design and development companies, computer networking companies, software are some among the probable work places.
IT Industry has opened a treasure of opportunities before young aspirants.
India
has become a great business center for people all over. Naturally then there are many opportunities including:
- Work for IT giants like Microsoft, Google, Adobe, Satyam, Infosys, TCS etc.
- Sofware career has variety of job profiles in development, Testing, Support, Networking, Security etc.
- A job in govt. sector is also ample with govt. pro actively implementing ICT in all spheres.
- New age entrepreneur’s hottest target is IT services, so one can also look avenues of setting up own firm.
IT Engineers can also work as Teachers or take up the field of Research and it can really serve a satisfying career.
Salary – The pay scale for Programmers can range from Rs.15000/- to Rs.25,000/- per month. Software Consultants can demand up to Rs.50, 000/- per month. And the pay scale just goes up as the IT Engineers at the management level get as much as Rs.1,00,000/- per month. IT Engineers related with field of maintenance can earn in the range of Rs.15, 000/- to Rs.1, 00, 000/- per month. According to a survey conducted in
USA
in the year 2003, the average salary of a software engineer was in the range of $64,000 to $97,000 along with the perks and benefits like a company car etc.
