This test is administered by Pearson VUE under the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and it tests the candidate's competency in Analytical skills, Quantitative ability and Verbal ability which is known to be an indicator of academic success in the business education course.

Duration of the test

The total duration it takes usually to complete the test is 4 hours. At the end of this time, if any of the questions have not been attempted, each question left out attracts a penalty.

The Syllabus

Candidates must be prepared with elementary mathematical concepts in the areas of Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic, Modern Math, Basic Statistics and topics such as Permutation and Combination, Time Distance Speed and Probability.  As the GMAT is taken by candidates from varied educational backgrounds, they are not tested on any specialized math topics. The candidate must also be prepared to tackle the verbal section by being familiar with Standard Written American English and its Grammar, Style and Usage.

While the GMAT does not test a candidate on the knowledge of key business areas, staying abreast of the same might be useful when it comes to college application essays and in the essay section.
