Introduction :-

TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language is a test taken to measure a candidate's capability to understand and use the English language as it is spoken, heard, read and written in the classroom environment of a University. This test is a widely accepted test to measure the English proficiency of students whose native language is not English. This test, which is often referred to as the TOEFL iBT that is, Internet based test, is conducted by ETS at more than 4500 cities in the world. Accepted by 7,300 universities, agencies and other institutions in more than 130 countries in the world, it is most accepted English language test globally. In places where the Internet based testing isn't possible, a paper based version of the same is available.

Why is the TOEFL required?

The TOEFL, as aforementioned is the most accepted English language test in the world and what universities all over the world consider as the most comprehensive test that simulates the use of the English language in an academic setting. The TOEFL can also be taken at centers all over the world which makes it easier than taking other tests. It also measures spoken English skills better than other tests because it is uses a less intimidating method to test the candidate and has an objective rating system. As the test involves human raters who score the test anonymously, the scoring is fair and eliminates inconsistencies, thus making it a reliable indicator of the candidate's abilities.

Duration

The TOEFL has a total duration of 4.5 hours.

Syllabus

The TOEFL tests all the aspects of English communication that the candidate has developed over a period of time, the syllabus includes English grammar, structure and usage. While there is no specific syllabus for taking this test the candidate should revisit the various aspects of grammar and usage, sentence construction, familiarize oneself with different literary styles, be able to recognize and comprehend different accents and nuances of spoken communication. The candidate should also be prepared with several practice essays on various topics, be aware of current affairs and be able to articulate thoughts in a cohesive, structured manner through written and spoken communication.

Eligibility Criteria for TOEFL

Anyone can take the TOEFL. There is no age or minimum educational qualification required to take this test.
